If you’re planning a student trip to Europe, there are some important travel updates coming soon. Here’s what you need to know about the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES), European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), and the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirements.
Travel Changes at a Glance
- EES implementation has started . This will replace passport stamping with a digital process using fingerprints and facial scans.
- UK ETA launched November 27, 2024. Required for trips to the United Kingdom starting January 8, 2025.
- ETIAS begins mid-2025. Travelers from visa-free countries, including the U.S., will need authorization before entering the Schengen Area.
What Is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?
EES is an automated border control system for travelers from non-EU countries visiting the Schengen Area for short stays (under six months). It replaces manual passport stamps to speed up border crossings and increase security. How It Works:
- Collects biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) when you enter and exit
- Records your entry/exit dates, times, and border locations
- Logs travel document details, name, date of birth, and outcomes of entry checks
This system applies at Schengen airports, seaports, and land borders.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It’s similar to the U.S. ESTA and will be mandatory for citizens of 60 visa-exempt countries (including the USA & UK) traveling to the EU for short visits.
How It Works:
- Apply online in about 10 minutes
- The system checks traveler information across EU security databases (SIS, VIS, etc.)
- Most approvals come within minutes; some may take up to 96 hours
- Once approved, authorization is electronically linked to your passport
- Valid for three years (reapply if your passport expires sooner)
Cost: About $8 USD (€7), free for travelers under 18 or over 70.
What It Means for U.S. Students
U.S. travelers—including student groups—will need ETIAS authorization before entering the Schengen Area, even for short study programs, vacations, or cruises. Every traveler must apply individually, regardless of age. You can apply once the system launches at the official ETIAS site.

What Is the UK ETA?
The UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorization will soon be required for visitors from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most non-European countries entering England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.Launch Dates:
Required for travel from January 8, 2025 onward
How It Works:
- Complete your application online or in the app
- Approvals typically arrive via email within three business days
- Authorization links electronically to your passport
- Valid for two years or until your passport expires
Cost: About $13 USD (£10), required for all travelers regardless of age.
